And the Beat Goes On by Nancy J. Reid For thousands of years Asian and African cultures have used rhythm circles in rituals, ceremonies and feasts. In the ‘60s African jazz musicians brought the now popular "drum circle" to the States. This is a powerful means of expression that now is believed to also have psychological and medical benefits. Researchers have found that drumming increases disease fighting cells, and it is now used as a supportive treatment for a variety of diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, chronic lung diseases, diabetes and asthma-just to name a few. Drum circles also give participants a way to release fierce emotions and onlookers can’t help but sway or dance to the primal rhythms. This has led to the use of drum circles in youth correction centers. It is a positive way to let off some steam while learning to work within a group. If you have never witnessed a drum circle, look up one in your area.
You will feel better for it, and who knows, you may be tempted to get
out the pots and pans and create some healing rhythm for yourself. Home To CEDAR
