NAJOUM- SUMMER SIZZLERS 2003

****OUR STARS****

To start our summer magic carpet ride I would like to tell you about three of my teachers here at Art/Dance Academy.

***STAR*** # 1 is relatively new to our studio. She came several months ago and it was instant rapport between us. This very lovely lady is a relative new comer to teaching in our area. She has excellent training by way of Fazil’s in NYC. That is where we made our connection.

Marisol Lopez began her Flamenco studies in San Diego with Yaelisa in 1989. Marisol embraces flamenco in classes and workshops around the country from many famous flamenco artists including Farraquito, Juana Amaya, Cichtli Ocampo, Oscar Nieto, Victorio and La Chacha. Her most recent studies were with Sara Olivar. She also participates in flamenco gatherings where her performing aility has developed as “festero and con aire“. She also directs and performs with her dance troupe “GUAPERIAS”

Marisol has been teaching Sevillanas and Rhumba dance for the last three years. Her classes are fun while working on the basic technique of Flamenco and the development of true Spanish presence. To dance with duende. Her other location is at Stage 7 School of Dance North Park. She has now expanded her teaching into North County and will be forming new classes in La Mesa and Chula Vista. Learn the Sevillanas, a partner dance in four sets of coplas danced at gatherings throughout Andalucia, Spain. Playful, gracious, and lively movements with touches of Flamenco characterize this popular and folkloric dance form.

My second ***STAR*** has been teaching in my studio for about three years. He is a master of Ballroom, an excellent teacher, great performer and a wonderful person. His name is Mel Carrillo and he has been teaching around the San Diego County area for many years. Anyone who wants to work with someone with charisma, patience, quality and experience, Mel is your man. Mel’s unique style of teaching gives the beginner confidence and a smooth relaxed appearance from the first step. The continuing dancer will add polish and style to their dancing.

He started dance classes in the classics and Polynesian at the age of 8. By the age of 15 he was an assistant teacher for the Bay Cotillion. He began teaching for Fred Astaire Studios while in the Navy. At the same time he did some performing in musicals New England. After the military he taught and performed in the San Diego & San Francisco area. he then moved to Valley Center and worked for four years for Arthur Murray Studios. He was named TWICE Teacher of the year. for the Southwestern US.

From 1980-1990 he owned and operated his own studio in Escondido. he then branched out to also has been teaching till this day at Mira Costa & Palomar Colleges, Joselyn Centers and various studios throughout the county

***Our Secret STAR**** JULIE KIRILLOVA

Newly arrived here from Russia with he husband Alexi and baby daughter Katia to the Carlsbad area Julie is literally a gift from heaven. The staff here at A/DA have been trying to pull our resources together to give the basics of ballet to the more advanced students and performers so that their dance is stronger and cleaner. We know the value of ballet for basics but do not want to try to lose the essence of Orientale Dance. As we were muddling this over and trying to pull back the years of ballet we have had to the forefront a telephone call changed our lives.

Enter stage right, JULIE a professional world class ballet dancer. At the age of nine Julie enrolled with the Choreography School of Ballet where for eight years she was trained by the distinguished teachers in the best traditions of the Russian School of Ballet. Upon graduation she was one of the select few invited to work in the Ukraine in the of the Donetsk State Academy Theater under the leadership of the “Best Ballet Company of the World” for the years 1995-1996 Vadim Pisarev. Julie has traveled Europe and Asia with the company performing solo parts. At this time, The company again was named “The Best Ballet Company in the World” for 1998.

Julie then turned in her toe shoes for marriage, a baby and family life. Of course, there is no such thing as a dancer just quitting. So Julie expanded her knowledge by teaching ballet to teachers and adults. While still in the Ukraine she trained the State Folkloric Company to have more stage presence and a better ability to move in dance. Now we are very proud to add her name to our roster of top teachers in San Diego County that instruct at our facility. What a difference I see in our dancers already in just 2 months.

Julie we embrace you into our family of dancers and to America.

Julie will continue working with the students and dancers at A/DA and will also be adding children’s classes in the fall. Literally a gift from heaven in our ongoing process of trying to offer the best available teachers in the area to give you the best available dance learning experience or you. To help you be the best possible dancer you can be.
